Maria Martinez was famous for the beautifully hand shaped pottery she created. Since she didn't paint designs on them, she always had a family member do that. But after Po's death in 1971, she worked alone, except for Santana and Adam's help with firing. These pieces are signed with her given name of Poveka, Pond Lily.

Traditionally hand built with coils of native clay, highly stone burnished then pit fired in a reduction fire to create the black. The gun metal luster comes from a certain heat and timing, not always accomplished when attempted.

This beautiful jar stands 4 3/4" tall and 4 3/4" across.

Fine original condition, no damage, no repair.

What a great price for a piece of history by one of the world's most famous Indian artists!
