Deep black pottery vase with carved bear on the lid by Joseph Lonewolf, Santa Clara Pueblo. Lonewolf is credited with beginning the style of carving called sgrafitto, lightly etched into the polished surface.
The beautiful vase is highly stone burnished then lightly carved, a separate lid is embellished with a carved clay bear fetish, complete with turquoise and coral medicine bundle.
The Avanyu which is the water guardian flows into the Sun Kachina, both recurring themes in Joseph's early pottery.
Signed and dated 1976, mint condition! 3 1/2" tall by 1 1/4" across the body.
