Charming effigy pot with two heads
made by the Maricopa Indians of Arizona. Made in the style of the Mojave effigy pottery, we can tell by the slipped clay and red iron oxide paint that this is Maricopa. In the 1960s, an Indian art Dealer urged some Maricopa potters to make effigy pots like those of Annie Fields and Elmer Gates. Since the Maricopa were originally over on the Colorado River, they felt comfortable with that idea. We have seen effigies by Mabel Sunn, Vesta Bread, Barbara Johnson, Therolina Bread and Warren Oliver. My best guess is Therolina Bread. This unsigned piece has painted tattoos and beaded jewelry. Stands 7 1/2" tall by 8" across the spouts. Excellent condition, circa 1960s. Buyer pays $20.00 for shipping and insurance. |
