Aya, a gourd rattle with cottonwood root handle is traditionally hand crafted by Hopi Indian artist Larry Melendez. Larry is featured in Jonathan Day's book "Traditional Hopi Kachinas, A New Generation of Carvers". This type of gourd rattle is given to boys by Kachinas during Powamu and Home Dance.
