One of the last of the great Yavapai Indian basketry weavers was Bessie Mike from Fort McDowell, Arizona. This large willow and devils claw olla stands 18" tall and is 16 1/2" across the low shoulder. 12 wefts and 2 1/2 coils per inch.
Woven by Bessie Mike for the man in the photo, he purchased it in 1976. After 33 years the willow has achieved only a small patina. Still bright!
It is always interesting to wonder about the weaver's intent to tell a story with the pictorial elements such as the male figure who looks alot like I-toi, Elder Brother. The second man has rain coming down and there is a deer and a dog and an eagle. Placement of the dark bands is asymetrical and there are tiny triangles at the rim.
Condition is excellent, no damage no repair.
This wonderful basket is a reminder of the Yavapai glory days of fine basketry weaving.
