Large Marie and Julian Black Pottery Jar
San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery jar by the famous Indian potters Marie and Julian Martinez was made early in their career, before 1930 which is when they used the signature of "Marie".

Maria would carefully shape the coils of native clay into graceful jars and bowls, then stone burnish the slip to a high shine. Her husband Julian would then paint his magical designs and together they would pit fire the vessel to a black finish.

This large jar measures 11 3/4" diameter by 7 1/2" deep, truly one of the largest jars we have ever had!

Look closely at the bottom half of the vessel, there has been water that has soaked through and left the surface rough. But only the polished area is affected, the matte design is very clear. The inside of the jar has been coated with something black and shiny, but nothing has been done to the outside.

This large jar would bring a five figure price if not for the surface, but it still displays beautifully. You can have it for a much more reasonable price. The owner of this old pottery bowl is willing to come down to $5500.00 from his original asking price of $6500.00.

What a great opportunity to have a major piece of art by the world's most famous Pueblo Indian Potters!

Buyer pays $50.00 for shipping and insurance.
