This is a Hopi Indian coiled basket by Gladys Kagenveama, Spider Clan, Shungopovi, Second Mesa. Gladys has been one of our finest Hopi Indian basket weavers for over 30 years! She is not weaving any longer, this basket was made over twenty years ago. We also buy baskets from her daughter, Regina and niece Alicia Adams. Regina and Gladys are both featured in Helga Tiewa's book on Hopi Indian Basket Weavers. Traditionally handcrafted with native materials of yucca and a grass bundle foundation, sunflower seeds for black dye, native tea for red dye. The original hanger is woven into the back. At 8 3/4" by 1 1/2" it is the standard size for the Supai Kachinas to carry while dancing. 36 stitches and 3 coils per inch, very tight weave, hard as a bowl. There are two tiny holes near the center, where the strap was attached. The Supai Kachinas dance to thank the Havasupai People for protecting the Emergence Hole called Sipapu that is at the bottom of the Grand Canyon where the Hopi believe they came up from the previous world. The basket design is symbolic of both worlds and the 'Sipapu'. At the bottom of the basket is a 1/4" area of loosened stitches, from Native use.
