The Navajo Indian weavers were encouraged to experiment with native plants and to document the recipes during the 1930s and 40s by Sally and Bill Lippincott at the Chinle Trading Post. One of the Navajo ladies was Mabel Burnside Myers, daughter of famed silversmith John Burnside. As a way to preserve the samples of plant colors, she created a dye chart with plant dyed wool connecting the plants to a small weaving loom sample, under framed glass. Taken up by her daughter-in-law, Rose Myers, in the 1970s, Rose continues to supply us with this pretty wall art. She gathers the plant material around the Reservation, then boils the wool in the solution. After that she spins the wool and makes a tiny loom on which she starts a small textile with each color strand going out to the plant. Displayed on combed white sheep wool and framed under glass. This frame is 9 1/2" by 12" and features eight plants and a sample loom. Buyer pays $12.00 for shipping. |
