A praying Grandfather Storyteller figure with eight children by Helen Cordero, the original artist of the Storyteller form.
Helen Cordero, Cochiti Pueblo Indian, b.1915-d.1994, created the first storyteller pottery figure in the late 1950s. She was the inspiration for generations of potters in her Pueblo and all the others. Rising to prominence in the 1970s, her large Grandfather storyteller was featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in the 1980s. No pottery collection is complete without one of Helen's "people".This rare praying figure is 12" long, 10" tall to his head and 5" wide. The story of why she created the Praying Grandfather has to do with a collector getting down on his knees and "praying" for Helen to make a storyteller for him. When he arrived to get his Storyteller he was amazed to see the praying figure! Seven boys sit on Grandfather's out stretched legs, one boy clings to his back. The painted details include fancy shirts on each child and detailed clothing and moccasins on the grandfather. The condition is excellent for a piece from the 1970s.
