Navajo Indian Folk art is a specialized collectible art form. Most tribes do not make non-religious oriented representations of people. The Navajo have a highly developed sense of humor and love to point out the foibles of themselves.

Many of the folk artists portray the Navajo persona in wood carvings and clay.

The Zuni Indians of New Mexico are the fetish specialists, other tribes would go to the Zuni for hunting, healing and flock fetishes. A fetish is a carved representation of an animal with the spirit residing in the stone. Animals represent various attributes which aid in hunting, healing and protection. Current carvers are artists who render every detail of the animal. Fetishes are a great way to collect real Indian art for a very reasonable investment!
