At 24" diameter this is the biggest Navajo basket we have seen! A Wedding basket design surrounds the American Eagle for a bold statement! The details in his wings and tail feathers are sharp, his eye is turquoise, although faded a bit, and there is a silver button at the center to support the hanger.Woven in the 1960s, all sumac, dyed red and black, very nice even weave. One of the last of the great Yavapai Indian basketry weavers was Bessie Mike from Fort McDowell, Arizona. This large willow and devils claw olla stands 18" tall and is 16 1/2" across the low shoulder. 12 wefts and 2 1/2 coils per inch. Woven by Bessie Mike for the man in the photo, he purchased it in 1976. After 33 years the willow has achieved only a small patina. Still bright!... Click for details
